Staying connected is one of the best things older adults can do for their wellbeing. A full calendar, even a gently full one, gives each week shape and something to look forward to.

Close-to-home ideas

  • Libraries. Local branches host book clubs, classes, talks and technology help, and many programs are free.
  • Community and senior centers. Exercise classes, card games, crafts, shared meals and social events.
  • Faith communities. Services, volunteer groups and social gatherings throughout the week.
  • Parks and waterfront walks. Mild winters make morning walks, fishing piers and shaded parks easy to enjoy for much of the year.
  • The beach. A sunrise or sunset stroll, shelling, or simply sitting by the water with a friend.
  • Volunteering. Museums, gardens, schools and nonprofits often welcome volunteers with flexible schedules.
  • Classes. Art, music, fitness and continuing-education courses designed for older adults.

Making it easier to get out

Transportation is often the biggest barrier. If your loved one no longer drives, or isn't comfortable driving at night or in season traffic, plan outings around the ride. A standing Tuesday lunch with a friend is much easier when the ride is already arranged.

The heat matters too. In summer, plan outings for mornings or evenings, bring water, and choose shaded or indoor spots.

Staying connected at home

Not every day has to involve going out. Phone and video calls with family, visits from friends, games and puzzles, gardening and cooking together all count.
